Living in Alberta, with winter lasting for several months of the year, it can be tough to keep your Edmonton carpets clean. Here are 5 tried and true tips you can start using today, that will keep your carpets clean throughout the winter and into the muddy spring season!
Tip #1: Keep your sidewalks and porch shovelled
I know, we detest shovelling too, but guess what? You can’t track in mounds of snow if there isn’t any stuck to your boots – Shovel those walks!
Tip #2: Add additional mats at the entrance to trap soil
Purchase an inexpensive synthetic mat with a short, tight pile. Whether you’re layering this mat over top of wall-to-wall carpet or placing it on a hard surface, it will absorb the soil and snow from the bottom of your boots.
Tip #3: Invest in a boot tray
Purchasing a boot tray like this will give your family (and guests!) a visual of where to put there soiled footwear. These are great because they’ll hold the muddy, grimy water that melts off of your boots, along with any sand and gravel.
Tip #4: If you have a dog, teach them to wipe their paws
This is a fun trick for your dog to learn! Once they learn the behavior, and you can cue them to “wipe” when they come in. Now, instead of bolting up the stairs with muddy paws, you’ll have clean carpets and a cool trick to show off.
Tip #5: Vacuum Weekly
Vacuuming weekly will keep any soil that does make it past the entryway, from getting ground into the carpet. Focussing on high traffic areas while vacuuming is the key to making your carpets last longer – not just stay cleaner! Over time, as dirt builds up in the carpet, it rubs against the fibres and starts to wear them down. Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum.
Another key to keeping your carpets clean in the winter, is getting them professionally steam cleaned. In Edmonton, winter lasts 6… 8 months out of the year!
