How to Remove a Berry Stain from Carpet

We’re not going to sugar coat it, removing a berry stain from carpet is definitely a challenge! Stain removal is pretty complex chemistry and the important thing to remember is, don’t panic. Sometimes people see mashed raspberries in the carpet and start spraying everything they can find under their kitchen sink to try and remove it. Don’t be that person. Why? Because that person probably bleached their carpet- eek!

What you’ll need to remove a blueberry, raspberry or strawberry stain from your carpet:

  • Spray bottle with warm tap water
  • White Cloth
  • Paper Towels
  • Heavy Books

Ideally, you’ve caught this accident right after it happened and it’s still wet. If you’ve stumbled on to this discovery and it’s dried, start by misting some water on the stain and leave it for a few minutes to loosen it up.

Next, remove as much as possible by gently blotting with paper towels.

If this is working (you’ll see color on your paper towel) keep at it until it’s removed. Then mist it with water, apply a pad of clean paper towels and a stack of books on top. Leave it for 30 minutes or until dry.

If you’ve gone as far as you can go with warm water and blotting but there is still color remaining, here’s what to do:

In a spray bottle, mix ¼ tsp of bleach free dish soap and 2 cups of warm water. Spray this on the stain and gently blot the stain. Once it’s removed, mist the area with clean warm water. Then, apply a pad of clean paper towels on top, a stack of books and leave it for 30 minutes or until dry.

A note on stain removal:

This works 95% of the time if the stain is fresh. Older stains are more challenging and may require professional stain removers. Keep in mind, that everything you apply to this berry stain (peroxide, lemon juice, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, oxygenated bleach, etc.) all cause a chemical reaction that will have unpredictable results. If the above didn’t work for you, contact us today to book an appointment and we’ll do our best. Of course, we can’t guarantee we can remove it (berry stains are tricky) but we’ll give it all we have.
