Winter Asthma Triggers

Asthma sufferers know that when the cold weather hits, your asthma can flare up, especially for those who exercise outdoors and for children playing outside in our harsh winter climate. The winter triggers for asthma can be slightly different and less conspicuous than other seasons as many people assume that because of the snow all of the allergens have disappeared. But this is hardly the case – there are many triggers that can affect asthma sufferers – learn more about them so you can avoid those surprise attacks

  1. Cold air can be a trigger for many people and is generally prevalent throughout the winter season in Edmonton. Covering your mouth and nose with a light scarf even in milder temperatures will help your breath stay warmer.
  2. Your pets will be inside much more often (or always) during the colder days so try and bathe and/ or groom them as often as possible to keep the dander and loose hair to a minimum.
  3. Keep the relative humidity in your house between 40% – 50%. Try not to use a humidifier if possible as they can breed bacteria and cause mold. Having your living environment cool and dry can help ease your symptoms immensely.
  4. Booking a furnace cleaning will help to get rid of dust, pet dander, mold, dust mites and more harmful allergens in your home. Make sure your furnace cleaning tech only uses all-natural, eco-friendly cleaning products.
  5. Cover your duvets and extra blankets to discourage the reproduction of dust mites as they can cause asthma symptoms as well.
  6. If you are an avid exerciser try to do it indoors. If you are going to run, walk or do any form of exercise outside remember to breathe through your nose and wear a light scarf or face mask.
  7. Try to avoid asthma-inducing colds and flues by washing your hands, staying far away from people with viruses and getting the flu shot.
