Reduce Your Energy Bills This Spring

Everyone likes to save money, and we know our customers also care about the environment as much as we do. Little things around your house that you’re not doing could be eating a hole into your budget! So why not make a few small adjustments and save yourself a bundle in electricity costs this year.

Water Usage

Water is a huge cost for many families and a big complaint when the bill comes every month. But did you know that your toilet could be costing you big bucks? That’s right! Check and make sure that your toilet isn’t running when it’s not in use.

If you use a dishwasher and washing machine, always run them with full loads to minimize the amount of water that is used.

Teach your kids to turn the water off when they’re brushing their teeth and take shorter daily showers. Leave the long ones for the days you really need them! Also, make sure your out side hoses are free of leaks and that everyone in the house knows how to turn them off properly.

And, if you enjoy very cold water try filling up a jug at the beginning of the day or in the evening and keeping it in the fridge instead of letting the water run to your desired temperature.

Electricity

It can be difficult to use less electricity, especially these days with game systems, computers and hi-tech appliances being so prevalent in homes. But there are a few tricks to cut that consumption down quickly.

Book a duct and furnace cleaning appointment. Cleaning your furnace and ducts will improve the efficiency of your furnace which helps it run on less power. You should also have your furnace and air conditioning filters changed for the same reason. You can use a programmable thermostat to regulate the frequency that your furnace and / or air conditioner are turning on.

During the warm summer months you can try using a clothesline instead of your dryer. This will also cut down on the amount of chemicals you are putting on your clothing as they will have a fresher scent regardless.

If you are a fan of tea try using an electric kettle instead of the kinds you warm up on the stove. The newer kettles use much less energy to heat.

Unplug all of your appliances when they are not in use. Turning something off doesn’t mean it’s not slowly sapping electricity that you will be paying for. You can also save money with your appliances by making sure that they are energy saving models and that your fridge seal is working properly.

Using cold water to wash your clothes also saves a lot of energy and money.
